Alt text Jose A.D. Machuca was presented with the Production and Operations Management Case Award at Universidad de Sevilla in Spain on Wednesday (7 June).

Jose, who co-authored the winning entry on Spanish clothing giant Zara with Kasra Ferdows and Michael Lewis, was a justified winner, as the case has already been taught to 1,000 students in 12 different countries.

The winning entry follows on from the trio’s first case on Zara in 2003, which is one of The Case Centre’s all-time bestselling cases, having been taught at over 140 organisations worldwide.

“This award means a great deal to Mike, Kasra and I as both cases have made such an impact on the learning and teaching of the case method,” said Jose, Professor of Operations Management at Universidad de Sevilla, which boasts more than 70,000 students.

“We’ve acquired a lot of knowledge on Zara over the years. Importantly, we’ve been able to share this information with fellow scholars, and case students worldwide have benefited.”

Jose collected the prize at the University’s Economy and Business School before his peers and Sevilla’s Vice Director of Research, Dr Julián Martínez Fernández.

Dr Fernández added: “Jose is a deserved winner as out of all the entries for this category his case been used in the largest number of organisations across the globe, and as a university we’re so proud of his successAlt text

“The School of Business at the Universidad de Sevilla is recognised internationally, and Jose and his colleagues’ hard work is the reason why we have that status.”

Richard McCracken, The Case Centre Director, commented: “You only have to see the quality of Jose’s case by looking at this year’s other award winners; institutions include Harvard Medical School, London Business School and IMD. That’s very good company to be keeping. Jose is a very worthy winner.”
