N. Craig Smith joins The Case Centre's Executive Committee
The Case Centre is delighted to confirm that Professor N. Craig Smith has joined its Executive Committee.
Craig has been part of the INSEAD faculty for the past 13 years, and holds the INSEAD Chair in Ethics and Social Responsibility at the School’s Europe Campus in Fontainebleau, France.
Other roles at INSEAD include being the Director of ESRI (the Ethics and Social Responsibility Initiative) – a part of The Hoffmann Global Institute for Business Society – and a specialist professor at the INSEAD Corporate Governance Center.
Throughout Craig’s academic career, he has used the case method in his teaching and research, which has led to him authoring or co-authoring over 50 case studies, 13 of which are bestselling or award-winning.
“I have always been fascinated by business and I find that case writing, be it for pedagogical or research purposes, is an excellent way of developing understanding of business, including its relationship with society,” said Craig, who was previously on the faculties at London Business School, Georgetown University, and Harvard Business School.
“I find that it deepens my understanding and that of others, be they students or other researchers.”
Craig’s research interests are at the intersection of business and society, encompassing business ethics, corporate social responsibility, and sustainability. His current research projects examine areas such as the 'price-tag society', Rawlsian business ethics, and corporate political activism.
He added: “I very much enjoy getting inside an organisation and learning about how individual decision-makers have tackled challenging issues of ethics, social responsibility and sustainability. I see case teaching as bringing that reality – as captured in the case – into the classroom, enabling students to wrestle with the issues faced by those decision-makers.”
In addition to his INSEAD duties, Craig is a regular speaker at international conferences, and conducts workshops with organisations on business ethics and corporate responsibility/sustainability. Furthermore, he serves on the Scientific Committee of social responsibility rating agency, Vigeo-Eiris, and now the Executive Committee of The Case Centre.
Craig concluded: “I have long been a huge admirer of The Case Centre as one of the leading distributors of case studies and proponents of the case method. It is an honour to be able to contribute in a small way to its mission by serving on the Executive Committee and to represent INSEAD in that capacity.”
