The Case Centre’s 32nd Awards and Competitions - Winners announced
2022 global Case Awards and Competitions reflect the pandemic
Fallout for business from the pandemic appears for the first time as a case topic among winners, most notably the Overall Winning Case: adidas: How to Keep Running Fast in a Post-COVID-19 World? This was won by Niccolò Pisani and Ornella Lupoi of the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) and the University of Amsterdam respectively, both of whom are first-time winners. They will be giving a webinar about writing and teaching the winning case on 24 March 2022.
IMD win the Overall Award for a fifth time in the Awards’ 32-year history, and also win this year’s Outstanding Case Writer Competition with Angaza: A Silicon Valley Journey, authored by first-time winners Vanina Farber and Shih-Han Huang.
The Competition Outstanding Case Writer: Hot Topic ‘Responding to shocks’ was also won with a pandemic-influenced case Zoom Video Communications: Flash in the Pandemic or Enduring Success? This case from Ivey Publishing was authored by first-time winners Malay Krishna and Gursimran Gambhir of S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR)*, celebrating their first institutional success.
Outstanding Contribution to the Case Method was won by first-time laureate Anne T Lawrence of the Case Research Foundation (its first institutional win). Also Professor of Management (Emerita) at San José State University, Anne Lawrence was recognised for her decades of dedication as a case author and teacher, and for her work as an advocate for the case method and mentor of early-career case writers.
The Competition for Outstanding Case Teacher goes to Nuno Fernandes of IESE Business School. He is a first-time winner, while IESE is a previous three-time winner of a management category Award.
The annual Awards (in 10 management disciplines, plus an Overall Award) and six Competitions celebrate excellence and impact in case writing and teaching. While the Awards are judged based on anonymised data recording the uptake of cases for teaching at schools worldwide, the Competitions are judged by bespoke panels of international experts. (Please see full details of all winners, and judging criteria and panels in the Notes for Editors.)
According to Richard McCracken, Director of The Case Centre:
“The 2022 Awards and Competitions highlight individual and school successes through one of the most disrupted times they have ever faced, providing a unique insight into what was being taught to business and management students – often, this year, online or in hybrid classes. They also reflect the focus of case authors as they navigated a path through unprecedented pedagogical challenges, keeping research and education going.
“A new generation of brilliant business and management graduates will be required to help economies and businesses across the world to regroup and thrive after the pandemic. These Awards and Competitions, with winners from Asia, Europe and North America, shine a light on where and by whom some of this expertise is being nurtured - often by new talent.”
*(SPJIMR, S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research, established in 1981 Mumbai + Dehli, is not to be confused with the SP Jain School of Global Management established in 2004 Dubai + Singapore, Sydney, Mumbai)
