The Case Centre is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of HEC Paris Professor Denis Gromb

Denis is pictured with Richard McCracken, former Director of The Case Centre, at his award presentation in May 2022.

Much loved by his students, colleagues and the wider case community, Denis touched many with his warm and personable nature as both an academic and a mentor during a distinguished 27-year career.

As the Antin I.P. Chair Professor of Finance at HEC Paris, Denis taught courses related to Corporate Finance in different programmes, with his principal research interests including corporate governance, banking, the economics of organisations and the limits to arbitrage in financial markets.

Prior to teaching at HEC Paris, Denis had been on the faculty at MIT, London Business and INSEAD, as well as a visiting stint at the London School of Economics.

Vicky Lester, CEO of The Case Centre, said:

“My deepest condolences go to Denis’ family, and all of those who were close to him. Denis was a much-loved friend of The Case Centre, and he was always such a passionate advocate of the use of the case method in his specialised field of Finance. Writing and teaching cases in Finance is never easy, so it’s a huge testament to Denis' talent as a writer that many of his cases were award winners and bestsellers. His contribution to the case method will always be remembered.”

Case method success

Denis was an award-winning case author, claiming the Finance, Accounting and Control category at the Case Awards in both 2018 and 2022. He also won the Finance and Banking category at the 2014 EFMD Case Writing Competition.

Furthermore, Denis appeared in the Top 50 Bestselling Case Author ranking in 2020/21 and 2021/22.
