Winners announced - The Case Centre’s 34th global Awards and Competitions

Winners of The Case Centre Awards and Competitions 2024

2024 results highlight pivotal trends in business education

The Case Centre’s global Awards and Competitions 2024 shed light on the trending themes capturing the attention of business education classrooms worldwide - Artificial Intelligence (AI) and sustainability.

Among the 15 case categories, AI takes centre stage in four. Three cases explore the global phenomenon ChatGPT (Overall winner; Knowledge, Information and Communications Systems Management; and Outstanding Compact Case), and one the use of AI in a healthcare setting (Entrepreneurship).

Sustainability is also a focal point, with cases in three categories (Economics, Politics and Business Environment; Free Case; and Outstanding Case Writer: Hot Topic) addressing important issues on the topic.

Vicky Lester, Chief Executive Officer of The Case Centre and chair of the judging panel, said:

“This year’s Awards and Competitions underscore the agility and insightfulness of case writers globally. They are swiftly producing high-quality cases on cutting-edge topics, which are promptly embraced by educators aiming to introduce the latest subjects to their students.

“Consistent with previous years, the 2024 global Case Awards and Competitions reveal growth in the case method worldwide, with 27 of the 30 winners securing their first award, and the 15 winning organisations representing ten different countries on three continents. Encouragingly, diversity among the winners remains robust, with 47% of awardees being female and 53% male.”

1.1 Outstanding Contribution to the Case Method - Shimin Chen

Shimin Chen

Shimin Chen is Zhu Xiaoming Chair Professor in Accounting, Associate Dean and Case Center Director at China Europe International Business School (CEIBS).

A passionate case teacher, writer and ambassador, Shimin has won an array of case writing awards, including success in the Global Contest for the Best China-focused Cases. Shimin has also been keen on promoting case writing methodology, working with CEIBS’ case research team to publish a book on questions and answers around case writing to mark the school’s 30th anniversary.

Since 2016 Shimin has served as the Director of the CEIBS Case Center. During this time, he has expanded the Case Master Development Camp from two classes to four classes a year, where CEIBS professors demonstrate best case teaching practices and share relevant experiences in case development. Open to faculty members worldwide, 24 camps have taken place with over 1,630 participants from 330 business schools in 20 countries. In addition to organising and leading, Shimin has taught at 14 camps since 2019.

In 2022, Shimin worked with CEIBS’ case writing team to initiate the Case Co-creation Community, a training programme for faculty members of business schools in China. It brings together case companies to provide projects on-site, aiming to build an ecosystem conducive to case development, use, and publication.

Furthermore, Shimin has been instrumental in expanding ChinaCases.org’s user base to increase case usage in China. He has visited countless schools and conducted workshops and talks on case teaching, writing, and publication. As a result, at the end of 2023, 8,000 faculty members from 100 schools and institutions now enjoy access to the case library, compared to 2,400 faculty members from 23 schools in 2019. The work of Shimin and his team has seen the usage of cases in classroom teaching in China grow from 100,000 case copies in 2019 to 300,000 in 2023.

His case teaching expertise is also much admired by students, with an average teaching evaluation standing at 4.89 on a five-point scale.

1.2 Outstanding Case Teacher - Euvin Naidoo

Euvin Nadoo

Euvin Naidoo is Distinguished Professor of Practice for Global Accounting, Risk and Agility at Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Euvin’s work at Thunderbird focuses on financial control, board governance, risk management, innovation, agility, and digital transformation. In January 2024, he launched Thunderbird’s inaugural programme on artificial intelligence, “AI and the Future of Work”.

While accounting, financial reporting and control is at the core of Euvin’s teaching, he has used the case method to transform a lecture-based subject that initially elicited apprehension among students into one that is now consistently rated as a favourite and transformational for many students and executives.

A firm believer in “learning by doing”, Euvin uses cutting edge digital tables to deliver a high impact case experience for the programmes he leads. Participants are immersed in the case experience and collaboratively synthesise information in real time to solve problems.

Euvin regularly uses roleplay in his case teaching to simulate workplace and boardroom scenarios, with a focus on also having participants develop a skill set to ask the right questions. He is perfectly placed to do so, drawing on his experiences as former Managing Director and Partner for the Boston Consulting Group’s Banking and Public Sector Practices across Africa with a focus on innovation, digital transformation, agility, ESG, risk and controls.

Through his ingenious application of the case method, Euvin crafts dynamic and engaging environments that captivate students and executives, fostering a passion for learning. This accolade is not just a recognition of Euvin’s exceptional teaching skills, but a testament to a deep commitment to excellence and innovation aimed at pushing the boundaries of traditional education.

Euvin is also Director of the Thunderbird Case Series. Researched and developed by faculty, the cases are used in Thunderbird degree programmes and executive education environments to illustrate real-world global management occurrences and initiate deep analysis and professor/student discussion of causes and solutions.

Furthermore, Euvin is heavily involved in several global platforms including the World Economic Forum (WEF) where he currently serves on the WEF’s Global Future Council on the Future of Job Creation, focused on the role of tertiary institutions in re-skilling, up-skilling and new-skilling society in the age of artificial intelligence.

Euvin has received numerous awards and accolades during his illustrious career. He is the two times recipient of the best professor award (part time) at Wits Business School in South Africa. He was also selected as the opening speaker at TEDGlobal, highlighting his commitment to inter-disciplinary collaboration being at the heart of creating workable solutions to address the world’s most complex management challenges.
