The Case Centre conducted a Case Awards presentation at IESE Business School in Madrid on Friday 17 June, where Nuno Fernandes received the Outstanding Case Teacher prize.

The award ceremony was hosted by José Luis Suárez, Madrid Campus Director, and María Coello de Portugal, Madrid Associate Campus Director. In attendance was The Case Centre Director Richard McCracken, and Nuno’s faculty colleagues and students. IESE Dean Franz Heukamp sent a video message for the event.

Richard said: “The judges and I were in no doubt that we had a nomination for someone in Nuno who was an outstanding case teacher in a highly competitive field.

“As an experienced case writer and teacher Nuno knows what a good case teacher needs, and how a case should be structured so it can be deployed properly in class.

“Also, Nuno’s students speak about him being extremely supportive both in the classroom, where he challenges them, and out of the classroom, in making himself available for advice and help. Students clearly respect and love Nuno.”

On receiving his award Nuno said: “The Case Centre is an amazing organisation so I’m very honoured to be chosen for this award that so many talented faculty worldwide were nominated for. I couldn’t quite believe that my students nominated me after cold calling them and working them so hard!

“This award all starts with students, colleagues and more. Ultimately our objective is to have an impact on students, but they also have an impact on me. I always learn a lot from my students, and I have been lucky to work in schools with great students. I have also been very fortunate to spend most of my career in institutions with great teachers, and I have had great mentors from whom I learnt everyday. I'm also grateful to have so many skilled staff around me helping to make my job easier: research and faculty assistants, programme coordinators, and all the people who work in the background to allow faculty to focus on what we do.”

Bringing the ceremony to a close with a video message, Franz Heukamp was proud to see IESE’s commitment to the case method recognised. He commented: “I’d very much like to congratulate Nuno on his award. At IESE we’re deeply connected with the case method as we use cases in many of our programmes, so we’re very proud and happy that The Case Centre has chosen an IESE professor to receive this award.”
