On 30 April The Case Centre visited IMD in Switzerland to present Julia Binder and Heather Cairns-Lee with the 2024 Outstanding Case Writer: Hot Topic: ‘Taking action on the environment?’ prize.

Julia, Professor of Sustainable Innovation and Business Transformation, and Heather, Affiliate Professor of Leadership and Communication, were presented with the award before faculty, friends and family in Lausanne.

Vicky Lester, CEO of The Case Centre, said: “The judging panel were complimentary about Julia and Heather’s case. They were impressed by the engaging and relatable story the case tells about a complex topic, and the way the case narrative ties in with the learning objectives and assignment questions perfectly. The case also has a very strong teaching note and supplementary video, key ingredients, especially if you want faculty around the world to have confidence in adopting a case and taking it into the classroom.

“Congratulations to both Julia and Heather on an outstanding case.”

The winning case was ‘Carbon Is the New Calorie’: Logitech’s Carbon Impact Label to Drive Transparency in Sustainability, which focuses on computer hardware and software company Logitech, and their carbon labelling initiative.

Julia commented: “Thank you to IMD and the fantastic case writing team here, as well as The Case Centre. We really appreciate the award. We hope our win increases the use of the case and has quite an effect on sustainability.”

Heather added: “It’s a delight that our friends and families are here to share in this moment. I think this is what IMD is all about - a community of like-minded people that you enjoy being and co-creating with. Thank you to The Case Centre for the award.”

Julia and Heather’s accolade increased IMD’s tally in the Hot Topic category to four since the competition was introduced in 2011; an achievement Anand Narasimhan, Shell Professor of Global Leadership and Dean of Research, is proud of.

He explained: “IMD is a small school that only produces a small number of cases, but the cases we do write are selling well and also winning awards. A number of IMD authors have won awards with The Case Centre in the past two years.

“We want to take a moment to celebrate Julia and Heather and their wonderful collaboration. They have all the hallmarks of becoming multi award-winning case authors. It’s a proud moment for IMD and we’re delighted to share in the celebrations of their achievements.”
