About Harvard Medical School Center for Primary Care

Given the demonstrated value and critical importance of primary care, the Center for Primary Care was established in 2010 to elevate and build a primary care presence not only on the HMS campus, but among their local, national, and international communities.

Delivering the best, most efficient primary care is the greatest challenge facing medicine today, because primary care serves as the foundation of all medical care - both care delivered and care averted. Despite facing serious challenges from outdated approaches to reimbursement, care delivery, and medical records, the Center for Primary Care believes in the potential of primary care to keep people healthy and connect them to the full spectrum of care available when needed.

That is why they are committed to uncovering, promoting, and fighting for the best and most efficient ways to deliver high-quality primary care around the world.

About the collection

The global demands on primary care and health care systems call for innovative approaches to teamwork, leadership, culture, financing and technology in order for care delivery to better cultivate patient and physician satisfaction.

While primary care leaders and practices have been chronicled in many venues, readers are limited to learning what these leaders or practices are doing, not how they operate. The Harvard Medical School Center for Primary Care seeks to fill this critical knowledge gap by profiling exemplar primary care practices, care delivery models, and health systems in order to learn how they deliver high performing primary care.

The case studies in this collection aim to create and disseminate knowledge about best practices in primary care, explicate how to best structure primary care delivery, and identify how systems have organised themselves to mitigate contemporary challenges including managing population health, controlling the high cost of care, and improving the patient and physician experience.

The cases in the Primary Care Systems case collection are used to train medical students, medical residents, as well as primary care and inter-professional health staff, practitioners, administrators, and leaders.

The Center uses the case collection in an HMS elective, Physician as Leader, and in our recurring continuing medical education programmes, which cater to a global audience of interdisciplinary health professionals and leaders.

The cases are also appropriate for public health or management audiences seeking to better understand primary care and its fundamental challenges.
