About the collection

IIMA is recognised as a pioneer in adapting the case method of teaching and learning to the Indian context. To promote the case method of teaching in institutes across India, the IIMA faculty actively published cases and other materials. A large repository of cases was gradually developed, and a Case Unit was initiated to maintain this repository. With the wide acceptance of the case method, the demand for cases from the Case Unit witnessed a significant increase. To cater to this demand, the institute established a Case Centre in April 2014 with a mandate to (a) support case writing (b) manage the distribution of IIMA cases and (c) promote case teaching.

The Case Centre is a growing repository of over 5,000 registered items, which include cases, cases (abridged), cases (graphic), teaching notes, technical notes, exercises, supplements, epilogues, audio-visual cases and supplements, and games written by generations of IIMA faculty members over six decades. These cases are an essential component of the learning-and-learner-centric pedagogy IIMA is known for - the case method.

Faculty members are encouraged to write cases by interacting with industries and bringing real-world business situations into the classrooms to provide a holistic learning experience. Hence, large portions of the cases and other materials is based on primary sources. At the same time, some cases discuss important topics backed up by secondary sources. Most of the IIMA cases are tested in classrooms before registration and publication for global usage.
The cases act as a window to see the functioning of industries at various levels and the problems encountered; they also discuss appropriate solutions to these problems. Each case represents the various stages of organisational growth and provides students with an opportunity to understand, practice, and remember them as a role model for sharpening their decision-making skills.

The Case Centre receives a continuous inflow of cases and related material for registration. All the cases are processed through a rigorous review-and-editing process before finalisation for publication and distribution. The cases and other materials are classified according to their respective disciplines, like Strategy, Finance and Accounting, Marketing, Organisational Behaviour, Human Resources Management, Communication, Production Management, to name a few.
