"It is much better to be picky and write one really good case than several mediocre ones. I also learned not to underestimate how much time and energy it takes to write any case."

Case writing is an art and I guess one important factor is learning by trial and error. I have been writing cases for about forty years, and it took me a long time to appreciate that it is much better to be picky and write one really good case than several mediocre ones. I also learned not to underestimate how much time and energy it takes to write any case.

The ideal case

Ideally, a case should be about a well-known company, and the answer to the issue in the case should not be obvious. Also, it should not require reading many pages of background information to get to the issue (hence, it should be less than 10 to 12 pages of text). Finally, those who analyse the case more thoroughly should be able to come to a different conclusion than those who skim the case.

Favourite case

Among my own cases, my favourite is Zara (written with Jose Machuca and Mike Lewis) because it is about a well-known and fascinating company and has many counter-intuitive lessons.

Most admired

I admire too many to name any particular ones here!
