"The reader must be able to understand and relate to the product or the issue at hand. The case must also quickly pull the reader in and force them to think about what they would do and why."

I simply write the types of cases that I would enjoy reading. I learned the art of case writing rather quickly because I read many cases when I was in business school and had fairly strong opinions about the types of cases I liked to read. The reader must be able to understand and relate to the product or the issue at hand. The case must also quickly pull the reader in and force them to think about what they would do and why.

Favourite cases

For obvious reasons, I am very pleased with the success of easyJet: The Web’s favourite Airline. However, most people would be surprised to know that the case study I wrote on Medi-Cult (Medi-Cult: Pricing a Radical Innovation), which has been successful as well, will always be special for me because it was the very first case I ever wrote. (Both of these cases were written while at IMD.) I was very intimidated by the topic and the industry, but I persevered. I shared what I learned about fertility procedures from writing that case with a close friend of mine and it helped her start a family!

I think the case method is one of the most effective methodologies we have for learning. I like that reasonable people can disagree about what action should be taken and that there are generally no right or wrong answers.
