Judge Business School wins its first European Case Award, while INSEAD dominates Awards, overall.

INSEAD has won six of the nine categories in the 2008 ecch European Case Awards and the overall award, for the second year in a row. Judge Business School won an award for the first time in the 18-year history of the Awards. London Business School and IMD also each won a category award. Several of this year's winning case studies looked at issues of developing countries and corporate social responsibility. 

ecch identifies winning cases through an objective process - cases are judged anonymously. 'Popularity' during the preceding three years is measured by the number of new and existing universities and business schools, worldwide, that have ordered the case studies from ecch to teach with. A case that has won a category award in a previous year cannot win again, but is eligible for the overall award. (This year's overall award winning case won the marketing category in 2007). The European Case Awards are presented in association with The Boston Consulting Group.

Mark Jenkins, Professor of Business Strategy at Cranfield School of Management and Chairman of the ecch Executive Committee, responsible for identifying the award winners, commented: 'The European Case Awards demonstrate that cases have a significant worldwide impact on business education at undergraduate, MBA and executive level far beyond the authoring school. Over the years of the European Case Awards, ecch's Director and Executive Committee have been impressed by INSEAD's consistent commitment to support the production of quality new case teaching materials, as evidenced in its repeated Awards' success. Judge Business School's first award shows that more institutions are writing successful new cases and this year's winning case from IMD, unusually, dating back to 1989, shows that a well-written case can have relevance to management issues today, long after the business scenario it first sought to examine.'

Professor Arnoud De Meyer, Director of Judge Business School commented: 'Case studies are an important part of the broad portfolio of learning methods we employ at Judge Business School. We source excellent cases distributed by ecch, but we also find it necessary to develop our own new cases, based on faculty research, that help us differentiate our programmes from those of other business schools. We strongly believe in the synergy between research, teaching and practical experience. Our award winning case is a nice example of this.'

Notes for editors

European Case Awards have been presented by ecch annually since 1991. They recognise the authors and institutions of cases that have achieved the highest growth in popularity worldwide. All ecch-registered cases authored or co-authored in Europe are put forward for the Awards. The objective is to provide formal recognition and exposure for successful case authors and their institutions. Awards are made in up to nine management categories, plus one overall winning case for each year. In 2004 a new award for the institution at which the overall winning case was authored was inaugurated in memory of Sumantra Ghoshal, one of the greatest case writers.

From 2007 the European Case Awards have been presented in association with the international strategy and general management consulting firm, The Boston Consulting Group.
