Tribute to John Constable, 1936-2011

7 May 2011

It is with great sadness we report that Professor John Constable, former Chairman of ecch, died on 17 January 2011.

John's long association with ecch began in 1974 when, whilst Director of Cranfield School of Management, he became the second Chairman of ecch. During his period as Chairman he was instrumental in creating a strategy that generated a surplus sufficient to justify appointing a full time Director of ecch.

As a keen case teacher and writer John published over 30 cases with ecch during his career. He won the Accounting Control and Business Environment category in the 1991 European Case Awards with a case on F Hoffman-La-Roche and Co AG. John wrote three specially commissioned cases for the ecch Case Challenge competitions in 1998, 2005 and 2007, at which he also chaired the judging committees.

John Constable and Jeff Gray John had been associated with Cranfield School of Management for over 35 years as Professor, Director and Visiting Professor. He was, for a brief period, Director General of the British Institute of Management. For the past twenty years he followed a portfolio career. This included teaching at Cranfield, Ashridge, and Bath University, being a non-executive director of three quoted companies, one a member of the FTSE 100, and several private companies. He was Chairman of a major charity, a Trustee of a large pension fund, a member of a District Health Authority and of the Civil Service Staff College Advisory Council and a Council member of two bodies influential in the provision of management education in the UK. He held engineering degrees from Cambridge and London Universities and a Doctorate in Business Administration from the Harvard Business School.
