Latest US board additions outline their vision

board roomRespected academics Mark Barratt, Lourdes Casanova and Vineet Kumar have been added to The Case Centre’s US board of directors.

Mark, Lourdes and Vineet replace the outgoing trio of Felipe Caro, Soumitra Dutta and John Thompson.

Mark is Associate Professor of Supply Chain Management from Marquette University and previously taught and studied in the UK at the University of Greenwich and the Cranfield School of Management. He has seen his research, much of it case-based, published in highly regarded journals.

“I want to further the use of case studies as a teaching method. I still witness too many academics who think that lecturing at students from the front of the room is the correct thing to do,” said Mark, speaking about what he hopes to achieve as a board member.

“The aim is also for The Case Centre to become the leading provider of case studies, furthering a progressive approach to encouraging the development of different forms of cases, as currently cases are somewhat static, with students discussing the next steps.

“It would be useful for cases to become more ongoing, or dynamic, where students are given multiple options to then discuss the next step the case organisation could take – similar to a live case format.”

Lourdes CasanovaThe second new addition, Lourdes, is based at the Johnson School of Business at Cornell University, where she is a Senior Lecturer and Academic Director of the Emerging Markets Institute. Specialising in international business with a focus on emerging markets multinationals, Lourdes was named in 2014 as one of the 50 most influential Iberoamerican intellectuals by Esglobal.

Lourdes, who aims to help The Case Centre expand into new markets, said: “I would like to bring an emerging markets perspective, and see more case studies published from Chinese, Brazilian, Nigerian (and Africa in general) and Indian companies.”

She added: “Besides from adding an emerging markets perspective, I would like to see how The Case Centre can incorporate more audiovisual materials, mainly videos from emerging markets companies. I am also looking forward to learning from the experiences of the other board members.”

Vineet KumarVineet completes the group of new board members. An Assistant Professor of Marketing at Yale School of Management, Vineet is an expert on digital technologies and his focus areas include network and large-scale data analytics. Vineet also won the Marketing category in the 2016 Case Awards.

He commented: “I would like to bring a digital and technological perspective as a board member. I think we're seeing transformative impacts of technology, such as self-driving cars, that have a huge potential to influence businesses, markets and have public policy implications.”

And on how he would like to see The Case Centre develop, Vineet concluded: “I'd like to see if the organisation could benefit from developing more sources of unique and complementary value.

“I’d also like to see if we can implement an experimentation approach to understand and enhance the customer experience, which I think would fit the goal of being a comprehensive provider of case-based products and services.”
