Five minutes with Tim Mescon

Tim Mescon is Executive Vice President and Chief Officer for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa for AASCB International, a global non-profit association creating the next generation of great leaders.

William F GlueckTim, you’ve worked in business education for many years, when did you first start using cases?

In my doctoral program, over 40 years ago, I studied under William F. Glueck, who was President of the Academy of Management and a prolific text author. I worked on a number of cases for an edition of his Strategic Management text.

What is it you like so much about cases and what role do they play in a students’ learning process?

Cases are a perfect reflection of engagement with the business community and applied writing that connects theory with practice. They provide a dynamic insight into company and industry issues and challenge students to connect their learning in an insightful, pragmatic level.

AACSB logoIn your position with AACSB, how do you think cases can contribute to accreditation?

Cases most certainly fall into our classification of Intellectual Contributions. They also engage the world of practice and are most frequently taught in a dynamic, interactive classroom environment.

If you could be transported into another profession for one week, which would you choose, and why?

I would love to be an airline pilot.

BikesHow do you relax?

Cycling in my adopted home country of The Netherlands is incredibly fun and relaxing.

Do you have a favourite quote or guiding principle?

One that was so often repeated by my father: Show Up, on time, dressed to play…you’ll never have to break a sweat.
