Cyprus International Institute of Management’s (CIIM) Olga Kandinskaia is ‘inspired’ to produce more case studies, after receiving the Outstanding New Case Writer Competition Award 2017 in Nicosia last Wednesday (3 May 2017).

Olga was presented with the accolade at an event hosted by CIIM to celebrate corporate partnerships’, which showcased their practical approach to business education and ties with the business community.

Olga’s winning case study concentrated on Founder and Managing Director of ENGINO Toys, Costas Sisamos, and his dilemma of whether the company’s future would be more secure in his native Cyprus or if it sustained the outsourced production option on offer in China.

“Winning this competition means the world to me,” said Olga, MSc Management Programme Director and Assistant Professor of Finance at CIIM.

“I have used cases in my teaching for over ten years and writing my first case turned out to be a challenging yet enjoyable experience. When using this case in class, I saw a radical positive change in students’ learning.”

She continued: “Winning the competition has encouraged and inspired me to develop and write more cases.”

The evening included a welcoming address from CIIM Director Theodore Panayotou, who highlighted the important links between businesses and academia, and a keynote speech from Yiannis Matsis, Hellenic Bank CEO, explaining how business schools help theory be put into practice in companies.

In addition, Richard McCracken, Director of The Case Centre, underlined the benefits all participating parties receive from a case study.

Richard commented: “There are of course a number of benefits schools and students enjoy from producing, teaching and learning cases, but it’s also a priceless opportunity for the protagonist to make use of the author’s findings and really improve their company.”
