Vlerick Business School’s Wouter De Maeseneire was delighted to receive the Outstanding Case Teacher Award 2017 before his peers in Brussels on Monday (15 May).

The prestigious prize, won previously by various high-profile management educators, recognises exceptional case method teachers, with the nominations made by current or previous students.

Speaking before Vlerick Dean Marion Debruyne, The Case Centre Director Richard McCracken, faculty and staff, Wouter reflected on the journey made to this point in his career.

“This award is very special to me, but it wouldn’t have been possible to win without my current or former colleagues, as I learned a lot from them,” said Wouter, who won the accolade after impressing a judging panel consisting of internationally renowned case method experts.

“I have never had any formal case teaching or writing training, which is why watching how others do it has been so important. My co-

authors deserve a lot of credit too, as they were instrumental in producing the cases.”

Wouter boasts an impressive resume, having written a dozen case studies on finance topics and household names, and teaching across the world.

Marion commented: “Wouter is a great case teacher and writer.

“He has written some of the most popular cases distributed by The Case Centre, and to write a case for other faculty members at other schools to use is not easy.

“Most importantly, I’ve never met someone like Wouter, who has such devotion and dedication to the education and learning experience of their students.”

Richard echoed these comments, keen to point out Wouter’s commitment to his students.

Richard said: “The students assessed Wouter’s teaching and felt he should have been nominated for this award – I think that says so much about his relationship with them.

“The judges praised Wouter’s student-centric style, which was backed up by his students accrediting his ability to enable everyone in the class to master cases.
