Rotterdam School of Management’s Tao Yue received the Entrepreneurship 2018 Case Award earlier this month (Tuesday 10 July) in the Netherlands.

Tao, Managing Editor and Senior Case Writer at RSM’s Case Development Centre, was joined in Rotterdam by Richard McCracken, The Case Centre Director, Bas Kone, Case Development Centre Director, and Gabi Helfert, Director MSc Programmes.

Alt textTao’s winning case focused on the environmentally friendly smartphone, Fairphone, and its CEO Bas van Abel.

"RSM's new global goal is to be a force for positive change in the world,” said Gabi.

“To reflect this, we are reviewing our teaching to ensure that it addresses how to work with these rich issues, and cases are great instruments to capture the challenges and dilemmas involved.

“We are very proud of the cases produced by our Case Development Centre, and especially of Tao's achievement in winning this award with her case on Fairphone."

Tao, who co-authored the case with Onajomo Akemu and Gail Whiteman, took the field research route, working closely with Fairphone, and was keen to stress both the pros and cons of this method.

Tao added: “In order to write a good teaching case, it is essential to have a company that is open to sharing information. But students and researchers need to be aware that companies often have promotional interests; they want to portray a desirable image of themselves.”
