The Case Centre Awards 2018

Syeda and Debapratim outstanding

Outstanding Case Writer

L-R: Debapratim Purkayastha, Richard McCracken, Syeda Maseeha Qumer and Dr J. Mahender Reddy

ICFAI Business School’s (IBS) Syeda Maseeha Qumer and Debapratim Purkayastha were presented with their Case Awards 2018 trophies in Hyderabad last month (16 November).

Syeda and Debapratim were triumphant in the Outstanding Case Writer competition thanks to their emotive case Breaking the Code of Silence, which involved an India female journalist being sexually assaulted by her boss.

Richard McCracken, The Case Centre Director, presented the pair with their prizes at Hyatt Place Hyderabad Banjara Hills, where he was also attending a Case Collection Managers Day with Debapratim and colleagues from other Indian schools.

“Winning prizes is important, rewarding and always a pleasure but we don’t write cases to win prizes or awards,” said Debapratim, Dean (Case Research Center) at IBS.

“We write because an issue is important and we want to explore it and because of the impact the case has in the classroom.

“This is an important issue and the situation and events we explore in the case predates and anticipates the #MeToo movement.”

Debapratim can add this trophy to his Outstanding Contribution to the Case Method Award and Outstanding Case Writer Competition accolades he won in 2015 and 2018 respectively.

Meanwhile, this is Syeda’s first award from The Case Centre.

Syeda, a consultant at ICFAI, added: “It’s such a pleasure to win this award. It is excellent to have recognition as a case writer, as sometimes we’re not always recognised like faculty.”

This presentation follows on from Vijaya Narapareddy Zinnoury – the third author of the case – being presented with her trophy in August in America.

Dr J. Mahender Reddy, ICFAI Vice Chancellor, concluded: “It’s highly newsworthy for a leading member of the school to be recognised through this prestigious award.

“It fits and supports the school’s strategy for internationalisation, taking the school’s name into other classrooms around the world.”
