The Case Centre Awards 2018

Joanne Lawrence wins award with first case

L-R: Richard McCracken with Joanne Lawrence

Ethic categoryHult International Business School’s Joanne Lawrence was presented with the Ethics and Responsibility 2018 Case Award in London last month (19 July).

After her co-author Andreas Rasche collected his prize at Copenhagen Business School in April, it was the turn of Joanne at Hult’s London campus in Holborn, where students, faculty and Unilever Vice President (Global Sustainable Business) Karen Hamilton, who Joanne worked closely with on the case, were all in attendance.

Joanne’s award-winning case, co-authored with Andreas and Kevina Kenny, Sustainability as Opportunity: Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan’, examines Unilever’s approach to sustainability as a strategic opportunity rather than a risk that needs to be managed.

“The case method involves plenty of research and theory and if you have a great teacher delivering a case in a classroom, then it can be a magical learning process,” said Richard McCracken, The Case Centre Director.

Karen Hamilton“There’s ‘that’ moment that sets the case discussion alight and that’s what we’re recognising with this award. Joanne’s case has done that in classrooms around the world, as proven by the amount of times her case has been adopted by fellow educators.

“Joanne is a truly talented case author and teacher and someone who fully believes in what the case method is trying to achieve.”

Joanne, who is primarily based at Hult’s Boston campus in the US, won the Ethics accolade with her first published case, making her award-win all the more impressive.

Joanne, Global Professor of Business & Society, added: “The Case Centre has a truly global collection of cases and this allows us at Hult, where we have campuses across the world, to use the right case for the right audience. The case method is a wonderful way to teach and The Case Centre helps us to do this.

“This is my first published case so I’m taken aback by winning this award, and hopefully it can inspire other case authors who are just beginning to write cases.”
