Richard McCracken, The Case Centre Director, was delighted to present Denis Gromb, Antin I.P. Chair Professor of Finance, with his award at a presentation at HEC Paris on 14 March 2018.

Denis won the Finance, Accounting and Control category award for his case, Prada’s Hong Kong IPO, co-authored by Alberta di Giuli of ESCP-Europe.

The presentation was attended by Associate Dean for Research, Christophe Pérignon, along with many of Denis’ HEC Paris colleagues and students.

Richard McCrackenOpening the presentation, Richard said: “This is the third time since 2015 that I have visited HEC Paris to present an award and I have a real sense that case writing and teaching is alive and well at the school.

“The winning case this year is a great case, but it is also a great finance case - a discipline where writing cases is not always easy. It features a great brand with very topical issues. The teaching note and additional materials are also very strong, and include an exploration of using the case in different contexts to help other teachers. It is a very worthy winner.”

Denis GrombDenis spoke about the genesis and content of the case: “I actually started working on this case at a case writing workshop organised by The Case Centre in 2013 so it’s great that it has come full circle.

“Prada is an interesting global brand in the fascinating luxury industry, and this helps students contribute more to the discussion in the classroom as they can bring their own knowledge. It’s also an intriguing event – why would an Italian family business do an IPO in Hong Kong?

“We were extremely lucky to have a great contact in Laurent Pellerin at Crédit Agricole, so we had a unique peak into the process of the IPO.”
