Columbia Business School’s Wei Ke and Costis Maglaras were presented with their 2019 Production and Operations Management Awards last month (Tuesday 23 April).

Alt textWei and Costis won the accolade for their case Markdown Pricing Optimization at Bloomingdale’s, which looked at efforts to help Bloomingdale’s improve its gross margins, and was co-authored by Garrett van Ryzin.

The Case Centre’s Tricia Haskell (Customer Services Officer) travelled to Columbia in New York to present the trophies to Wei and Costis, where they were joined by Shivaram Rajgopal (Vice Dean for Research), Elizabeth Gordon (Senior Director at Columbia CaseWorks) and Wei Jang (Vice Dean for Curriculum and Instruction).

“Wei and I are truly honoured to receive an award like this recognising our work,” said Costis, who has been with Columbia since 1998.

Alt text“We really enjoyed putting this case together. The Chief Financial Officer at Bloomingdale’s gave us great support, which really helped us produce a strong case, and they appreciated an independent audit of the multi-million-dollar markdown pricing system they were buying.”

Elizabeth added: “Columbia CaseWorks has been around since 2007 and we have seen an increase in usage of our cases since the likes of The Case Centre have distributed them.

“Now, we’d like to see more of our faculty writing cases, and hopefully Wei and Costis’ success will encourage them to do just that.”
