2019 Outstanding New Case Writer winners João Silva and José Azevedo-Pereira were presented with their awards at a sunset cocktail reception in Portugal earlier this month (Friday 7 June).

Alt textThe event was hosted at ISEG Lisbon School of Economics & Management, where João and José were both based when the case was written, by Professor Clara Raposo, Dean of the School.

Also in attendance was The Case Centre Deputy Director Vicky Lester, Vasco de Mello, Jose de Mello Group (JMG) President and Brisa Concessão Chairman and CEO; Manuel Melo Ramos, Managing Director at Brisa; colleagues and family of the winning authors; and colleagues from the wider business education community who had been attending the EFMD Annual Conference in the Portuguese capital.

author“In this competition, there were 34 cases submitted, from 29 business school in 13 countries,” said Vicky.

“The judges said that the winner was a great case, on a topic not many cases focus on. They also said the teaching note is superb, notably the question and answer section that allows potential instructors to imagine the classroom interaction.

“The case covers a very relevant industry and managerial issues and the writing style and protagonist setting was very enjoyable.”

João and José’s winning case Strategic Actions in Challenging Times focused on JMG, one of Portugal’s largest financial groups, as they were caught in the midst of the Portuguese austerity crisis in 2012.

The duo was delighted to receive the Outstanding New Case Writer accolade.

João commented: “Thank you to JMG and for all the support they gave us during the writing of the case. Thank you very much to my co-author, José, who was my masters supervisor and suggested writing this case. He also helped write the ‘superb’ teaching note.

Vasco De Mello“I hope that the case will be useful in future teaching, here at ISEG, and at other management schools around the world.”

José explained: “I would like to thank ISEG for their support throughout my career. It is also terribly important to thank Vasco de Mello and Brisa for all the support they have given us. It’s not easy to trust people that you don’t know and to spend time with. A case like this required a lot of work from us, and from JMG.

“This is important for the school and students. It’s important that students get a frequent touch a real life before they leave.”
Vasco de Mello then congratulated the authors and ISEG on their win, and added: “It is important to move forward with increased collaboration between schools and companies as an essential element for the success of Portuguese companies.”
