Scott Andrews is based at Cardiff University's Centre for Lifelong Learning, UK and is an Associate Lecturer on the MBA programme at the Open University Business School, UK. This workshop is for teachers who have little experience of using cases in their classes. The benefits of using the case method will be explored and the tutor will work with participants to develop practical skills in case preparation and classroom delivery.


This workshop will be of benefit to:
  • Junior or senior faculty from any academic discipline who have little or no experience of teaching with cases
  • Teachers considering case teaching
  • Those unfamiliar with the case method.

Programme 09.00h – 16.30h

Key issues to be explored at the workshop will include:
  • Types of cases
  • What makes a good case
  • Planning a case session
  • Demonstration case teaching session
  • The case map: knowing your audience and teaching environment
  • How to lead a case discussion
  • Using teaching notes 
  • Case enhancement: video, multimedia and other materials.


Participants will:
  • Develop strategies for appraising the quality and effectiveness of cases
  • Understand how to prepare for a case class
  • Learn how to lead a case discussion
  • Explore the roles played by a case teacher before, during and after the teaching session
  • Appreciate the benefits of a good teaching note
  • Consider how to enhance a case class.
