This case, set in 2015, can be used in postgraduate and undergraduate business management courses to teach social entrepreneurship, inclusive business models and strategic management. It is a demonstration case study of how Global Himalayan Expedition has become a successful for-profit social enterprise in a remote inaccessible location merging the elements of sustainability, education, adventure tourism, handicrafts, homestays and solar based electrification. This case highlights the social entrepreneurship scenario and the energy sector in India, the inclusive business model adopted by GHE and raises the question of how to scale up their business model. This case study is a demonstration of how a sustainable model of social impact involving microgrid based rural electrification and education in remote areas can be achieved in a Bottom-of-the-Pyramid (BoP) market.
