Abstract
This case is written for international business and business strategy courses as a basis of discussion. It examines the market entry and expansion of FedEx in Europe, from its beginnings to today. It explores the single market of the European Union as a business environment for the express service industry, explains the impact that the harmonisation of rules across EU member states had on FedEx and how the firm interacts with this business environment. The case further analyses how FedEx adapts its strategy to the diversity of demands and contexts that constitute the European market place, which is rather different to that of its home market, the USA. The case study thus also sheds lights on the activity of lobbying associations representing the firm’s sector in Europe, and the initiatives that will sustain the industry‘s competitiveness in the future.
