Abstract

This case is compiled from published and public sources. It depicts the Volkswagen (VW) scandal that was made public in September 2015, when Volkswagen admitted cheating on the US emissions tests norms relatively to the level of Nitrogen oxides (Nox) that its Diesel cars released in the air. The case explains how the scandal finds its roots in earlier decisions that go back to 2005 / 2007, and describes the actual and potential consequences for Volkswagen until mid-January 2016. The case has been written as an illustration of several concepts related to ethics and corporate social responsibility.
