The Case Centre Connect Issue 28

Dear colleague

Welcome to the Summer issue of Connect!

A former US Navy Captain, speaking from personal experience, provides a fascinating insight into differing leadership principles aboard two nuclear submarines, in one of our featured cases.

Also read about how a couple of entrepreneurs rejuvenated the rural economy of Northeast India with their ‘green’ initiative, and Frankfurt’s mission to diversify its tourism offering beyond the business sector.

Our fourth featured case explores the challenges of implementing a new method of vascular surgery on a wider scale in an Italian hospital.

Further content includes catching up with the Chairman of our US board of directors, Sam Hariharan, in ‘5 minutes with’; we take an in-depth look at the use of personal electronic devices by students in case classes; and celebrate the US office’s 25th anniversary.

Best wishes
The Case Centre team

Harvard Business School Senior Lecturer, Willis Emmons, discusses the best ways to prepare for case method teaching in this video by the Center for Audit Quality.

“I always say that a case is like reality TV compared to scripted programmes, in the sense that it’s about something real. It makes our teaching memorable and gets people excited.” – Pierre Chandon, INSEAD. Read more.

“For me, the three main factors that are essential to writing a successful case are a core concept, framework, or theory that one can build the case around.” – David A. Garvin (1952-2017), Harvard Business School. Read more.
