The Case Centre Connect Issue 41, Autumn 2019

Dear colleague

Welcome to the Autumn issue of Connect!

Amazon is under the spotlight in the first of our featured cases, as their Career Choice initiative tries to negate its strict performance targets and unfriendly HR policies.

We then tickle your tastebuds with burger chain Five Guys, who are contemplating how to advance their promotional strategy, now it has a sizeable budget, due to its global presence.

For the remaining two featured cases, there’s a 16th century mutiny brewing on the high seas, and the Tesla Model 3 production process runs horribly over.

In the first of our two features, we explore teaching with cases online, talking to leading case method practitioners. Workshops are the focus of the second feature, as we reveal the destinations we’ll be visiting, and the benefits you’ll gain as teachers and writers from our case training.

Finally, Lesley Symons, founder of The Case for Women, is the latest ‘5 minutes with…’ participant.

Best wishes
The Case Centre team

Loughborough University’s Sun Hye Lee shared her case writing tips when she received the Case Awards 2019 Strategy and General Management prize in May. Watch here.

“For me, case writing has generated enormous synergies between my teaching and my research. I have learned how my research ideas get put into action, especially in different sectors, such as nonprofits, healthcare, and governments.” – Robert S Kaplan, Harvard Business School. Discover more.

“Writing a teaching case is more similar to writing a spy thriller than a research article. To begin with, a case has to have a hook: an overriding issue that pulls various parts together, a managerial issue or decision that requires urgent attention.” – Ali Farhoomand, Faculty of Business and Economics, The University of Hong Kong.
