The Case Centre Connect Issue 49, January 2021
padding

Dear colleague

Welcome to the January issue of Connect!

As we say hello to 2021, the first Connect issue of the new year focuses on diversity in cases.

In the first of our in-depth features we examine the pedagogical, school and broader context of representing and addressing people of diverse backgrounds, underrepresented groups and environments, in teaching cases. The second looks at the Berkeley Haas Case Compendium which highlights cases with diverse protagonists, and that focus on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) related issues and opportunities.

Our four featured cases, all appearing in the Case Compendium, look at a venture capital firm launching a fund that will invest exclusively in black women, the journey of a woman from humble beginnings in India to a senior management position in a French luxury goods company, a change of leadership in an organisation that boosts employment of black, and Latinex engineers and a female executive adjusting to an all-male board.

Finally, Genevieve Macfarlane Smith, Associate Director at the Center for Equity, Gender & Leadership (EGAL) at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, takes the ‘5 minutes with…’ hotseat.

Stay safe and healthy!

“It does a disservice, both to the case method and to students, if we do not provide them with cases and approaches to case teaching that reflect their lived experience, but instead reinforce existing stereotypical limitations on their ambitions and aspirations.” – Richard McCracken, The Case Centre. Watch here.

“Most importantly we want teaching materials to reflect the world we want to be working in, with as many women as men, people from different ethnic groups, backgrounds, and sexual orientations, to help us become open-minded leaders of the world of tomorrow.” – Dounia, a business school master’s student. Read more.

“Students benefit by having case study protagonists with diverse identities. Research shows that students who can relate to diverse leaders have better self-perceptions, feel more confident and perform better.” – Genevieve Macfarlane Smith, Center for Equity, Gender & Leadership (EGAL), UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business.
