Abstract

Kingdee means 'Golden Butterfly' in Chinese. Like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, Kingdee's painful and rapid growth into a key player in China's software industry occurred in less than two decades. These two decades featured China's reform and opening to the outside world, two decades when people started to understand what computerized accounting was, two decades that turned Robert Xu, Kingdee's Chairman, from a conscientious young man into a sophisticated business leader, and two decades when the company gradually learned how to retain talented people in a city full of opportunities - Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China. This case features how Kingdee was founded by Robert Xu and its 20 years history, with a focus on Kingdee's unique corporate culture.
