Abstract
CIENA Corp designs, manufactures, and markets intelligent optical networking systems and software for service providers and enterprises worldwide. The company grew rapidly as the market for telecommunications equipment exploded with the Internet boom in the mid-1990s and late 1990s. By 2000, however, the market for telecommunications equipment greatly contracted and CIENA was faced with competing against much larger companies for a declining market. The case examines CIENA's strategies for dealing with the difficult environment for telecommunications equipment suppliers in 2002 and beyond.
