Abstract

This short note introduces some principles of direct communication designed to help students develop influence. The note encourages, inter alia, description over judgment, elimination of ''but'', avoidance of self-discounting, use of ''I'' statements, and refraining from disguising statements as questions; in short, it suggests ways to enhance one''s ability to influence others and offers guidance in eliminating those communication habits that tend to impede one''s ability to influence others. The note is intended to be used in a leadership course on the importance of effective use of language as a leadership tool.
