Abstract
The Indian Premier League (IPL) changed the face of sports in India. The league exhibited huge business and entertainment potential with the right combination of cricket, money and entertainment. The scale of revenues that the league generated, in terms of broadcasting rights, sponsorships deals, advertising rates, merchandise sale, franchisee fees, etc, catapulted it to the likes of Major League Baseball (MLB), Major League Soccer (MLS), and National Basketball Association (NBA); some of the richest professional sports leagues in the world. Inaugurated in 2008 with a brand value of $2 billion, IPL was ranked number 2 in 2012 on the basis of weekly average pay per player; the number one being National Basketball Association (NBA). However, the brand value of IPL took a beating in 2011 when it dropped to $3.67 billion from $4.13 billion in 2010. In 2012, a spate of controversies regarding match fixing, money laundering and players' misconduct off-field led to a drop in the popularity of the league with the brand value falling to $2.92 billion. According to experts, controversies were not new to the sporting leagues around the world and major leagues were also known to go through similar crisis phase. It remained to be seen whether IPL, with all its issues and challenges, could surge ahead and be a potential contender for the slot of richest sporting league of the world.
