Abstract

Mike Eze is on the point of leaving his position as company secretary and compliance officer of Ethniki Oil and Gas (EthOG) in order to undertake the setting up and managing of a non-governmental organisation. He is concerned about how to ensure continuous funding for the organisation without compromising the ethical principles he has long been known for. Although Mike had recorded marked success in building and sustaining an ethical culture at EthOG, he is uncertain of how to replicate this in his nascent NGO. The case, Mike Eze and the Ethniki Way, provides a description of how an organisation operating in a competitive and corruption-ridden sector built a sustainable culture of business ethics. It aims to provoke a discussion of the challenges of building an ethical culture: a) where there is an existing unfavourable environment b) from scratch - in a new organisation.
