Abstract
Of late, 'Africa Rising' and 'Lions on the move' narratives were highlighted in the media stating that African countries were progressing economically, notwithstanding the fact that there were high incidence of poverty levels, presence of weak governments, continued conflicts, poor infrastructure, prevalence of corruption and environmental degradation in Africa. Fall in infant mortality rates and infectious diseases, increased literacy levels, political stability had propelled Africa on an economic take-off and the country's abundant natural resources had triggered its unprecedented economic growth and development. Economic indicators of Africa's growth had given only a partial picture of development as Africa had achieved growth only in selective sectors of agriculture and extractive activities. Most of the African countries were either stagnating or moving backwards with regard to industrialisation. Despite the vital progress made in services industries and in per capita income levels, Africa was still not rising. The case study had attempted to analyse the growth of Africa, the challenges that were confronting Africa’s sustained growth and whether Africa was destined to be the next global growth engine for economic growth and development.
