Abstract

The Coca-Cola company was regarded as one of the leading soft drink manufacturers in the globe. It created a universal appeal by producing varieties of non-alcoholic beverages brands like Coca-Cola, Thums Up, Fanta, Sprite, Minute Maid, Powerade, Dasani, Glaceau Vitaminwater etc for the worldwide market. Over the years the company had spread its business in more than 200 countries in the world. In the Indian market, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd (HCCBPL) was the leading bottling partner of the Coca-Cola company. As of 2013, the HCCBPL had established 24 bottling plants at different parts of the country. In addition, the company had planned to invest 6 billion Rupees for setting up its 25th bottling plant at the Chharba village in the state of Uttarakhand, India. As a result, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the management of HCCBPL and officials of the State Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Ltd on 17th April 2013. However, the said project was strongly challenged by the environmentalists and local villagers, in order to protect the natural resources and maintain ecological balance in the region. They argued that the proposed project could seriously hamper the groundwater as well as the forest resources of the local ecosystem. Therefore, it remained to be seen how Coca-Cola would address the environmental challenges for safeguarding its proposed business venture in Uttarakhand.
