Abstract

The Transrapid is one of the hottest controversies in Germany in recent years on the development of the country''s transportation infrastructure. The case on the Transrapid high-speed magnetic levitation (maglev) train link between Hamburg and Berlin reveals how difficult it is to introduce advanced transportation technology within the context of a fragmented political environment of both State and Federal Governments, industry and, of course, the German Railways (Deutsche Bahn). The case examines the interactions, goals and perceptions of the various players in this demanding project and in particular the role that the media plays in forming public opinion. The case can also be used for roleplays and simulations of different stakeholder groups.
