Abstract

This note has been developed to provide an operating knowledge of process analysis. It provides a language for describing and measuring processes with the goals of improvement and comparison (benchmarking) against other practices. Process analysis involves four steps: (1) creating a process flow diagram; (2) analysing the operating unit structure; (3) analysing the work flow; and (4) evaluating the overall process. The primary objective of this note is to describe these four steps in some detail. Thereafter, a brief section outlines the connection between process analysis and benchmarking.
