Abstract

This is the fourth of a four-case series (IMD-3-0757 to IMD-3-0760). This last case, describes the tremendous changes that occurred in the building society and personal financial services sectors in the UK in the 1990s, provides an overview of the evolution of Halifax (the number one building society in the UK) after its merger with the Leeds in August 1995 until the end of December 1999. It includes, among other subjects of interest, a conversion from mutual to plc and bank status in 1997. This was the single largest extension of private share ownership then seen in the UK. As one of the UK's major personal financial service providers, the New Halifax is now subject to the scrutiny by analysts and to financial market pressures. The choice of the new Chief Executive Officer adds to questions and expectations as to the Banc-Assurer's future direction in the rapidly transforming UK and European financial service industry.
