Abstract

This is the first of a two-case series (IMD-3-0622 and IMD-3-0623). This case discusses the innovation process of the Schoeller''s Returnable Transport Container System (MTS = Mehrweg-Transport-System). A brief description is given of Schoeller''s development to a pioneering producer of returnable plastic bottle crates; its business situation, societal background and political pressure of the 1980s (and the beginning of the 1990s) in Germany. The case enables an analysis of a new entrepreneurial situation with respect to the environment and close-loop systems, definition of barriers and key factors for success, application of stakeholder approach and early warning systems, analysis and formation of organisational structure, formation of strategy for market introduction of new product solutions (especially MTS), formation of strategy for Schoeller.
