Abstract

This case highlights the story of Woodinthehood, a family-owned business specialising in the production of woodworking machines based in France. The company, from its humble beginnings in 1951, has undergone enormous growth notably in the last fifteen years. Now with an international presence and market sector leadership, Woodinthehood and its current leaders attribute their success to the same philosophy and values that have been embedded in the organisation since its inception. Aiming to further expand their global reach, the current president Aurelie, sought the help of an HR senior consultant. The conclusion reached was to hire a new Marketing and Sales Manager from the external job market, as the current Woodinthehood management team did not have a qualified candidate for the post. Included in the case is a copy of the job advertisement posted in an international business magazine, as well as an organisation chart and other relevant information about the company and the open position. It also previews the basic profile of a potential applicant whose interest was triggered by the job advertisement. This case aims to underline the importance of effective recruitment by taking into consideration two important perspectives. Firstly, it provides the perspective of a potential applicant for the job. This perspective would be easier for students to relate to as they themselves may be actively thinking of potential opportunities in the job market. It will provide valuable insights as to how aspiring job candidates can correctly 'read between the lines' of job advertisements so that they may get a better understanding of the position being advertised. Secondly it challenges them to shift the perspective to that of the company and examine various choices that have to be made in the context of recruitment. Armed with HR tools and theories, they are expected to be able to discern and design good recruitment strategies.
