Abstract
FOX Sports and ESPN were recognised as two major sports media companies in the world. ESPN had established its supremacy in the international sports media business for more than three decades (1979-2014), especially operating through sports cable television networks, radios as well as Internet services, broadband and wireless platforms. As a result, ESPN had become the dominant market player in the sports media broadcasting business. In an attempt to challenge ESPN’s market share, FOX Sports Networks Inc (FSN) launched FOX Sports 1 (FS1) as well as its sister channel FOX Sports 2 (FS2) in August 2013. On the other hand, the management of ESPN appeared unperturbed about the launch of FS1 and FS2 posing any potential commercial threat to its business. Therefore, it remained to be seen, whether the introduction of new sports channels of FSN would provide a stealth competition to ESPN’s dominance in future.
