Abstract
This is part of a case series. It describes how several important changes affecting the European automotive components industry led to the 1986 merger of five component suppliers, three Italian from the Fiat group and two French from the MATRA group, forming the new Magneti Marelli company. The objective was to build a world-class competitor in designing and manufacturing customised 'high-tech' products for car assemblers. Backgrounds of the five merged companies, Magneti Marelli, Borletti, Weber, Solex and Jaeger, are given and their main product lines are briefly described. Magneti Marelli company will have to face some tough challenges in order to establish itself as a worldwide leader in the automotive component systems industry.
