Abstract
The Indian retail sector witnessed tremendous growth and was a competitive market with a number of local and global players entering the fray to make good in the growing economy. Foreign retail giants IKEA, Metro Cash & Carry, Tesco and e-commerce leaders like Amazon, eBay, local players such as Flipkart were all crowding the market. Amidst this scenario, home grown player, Kishore Biyani's (Kishore) Future Group launched Big Bazaar Direct (BBD) in 2013, a cross between e-commerce and door-to-door sales. BBD aimed to cater to the majority of the untapped Indian retail segment. BBD was a franchise based model which hoped to reach customers at their homes and sell Big Bazaar's products at their doorstep. BBD's franchisees would be armed with tablets provided by BBD. The case analyses the factors that could make or break Kishore's ambitious new model. Will Big Bazaar Direct succeed as a unique e-direct selling business model which could turn out to be the next revolution in the retail industry?
