Abstract
Katherine Patterson is a high performing employee in an organisation, who is passionate about her work and is happy with her work environment and the organisation. The organisation also recognises Katherine’s abilities and the stage is set for her promotion. This situation begins to change dramatically with the joining of a new employee, who is supposed to assist Katherine, and learn from her at the same. The difference in their personalities and work style, within no time become a hindrance in their working together. The resentment that builds up culminates into a major conflict and is escalated to the bosses. The intervention of the committee of seniors proves counter-productive. The turning point in the case is her promotion that is announced sometime after this incident. Promotion which was much sought after by Katherine earlier is now reneged by her, and she tenders her resignation. The case is intended as an opportunity for students to discuss and understand the role of communication among employees in an organisation and its impact on performance and team work. It is also meant to highlight the significance of choosing appropriate communication channels in critical situations such as conflicts.
