Abstract

On December 2nd 2010, FIFA awarded Russia the hosting rights for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The decision was taken through a secret voting process held in Zurich by the 22 executive members of the FIFA. Russia trounced other bidding countries like Belgium-Netherlands, England, and Portugal-Spain to bag the prestigious international tournament under its kitty. This was a historic moment, as Russia became the first Eastern European country to bag the hosting rights of such a prestigious tournament. While Russia has already begun its preparations for the FIFA 2018, including announcing the names of the host cities and slew of other measures, criticisms had also started pouring in regarding FIFA’s decision to award Russia the hosting rights. Russia’s annexation of Crimea over Ukraine, country’s anti-gay law, racisms, violations of international laws etc, had been highlighted by critics as the major obstacles. Amidst this backdrop, how Russia was bracing itself for the event, despite the challenges, remained to be seen.
