Abstract
In mid-2003, Grupo Santander’s Management Control Area launched the MIS America project. The latter was framed within a global initiative to standardise the group’s performance measurement systems for the different business units the banking group had in the Americas. The company decided to launch the new system in Chile first and then roll it out to the other countries. However, the project suffered numerous delays, and organisational changes had occurred, seemingly complicating the new system’s implementation even further. Grupo Santander’s Business Management Control Area Director, Jesus Cepeda, had to decide what to do next. This case study examines the implementation of a corporate management information system (MIS) designed to address the differences between the different Latin American countries in which Grupo Santander had interests as well as respond to the group’s own needs at the corporate level.
