Abstract
A large portion of Indian population resides in villages. People migrate to urban areas looking for jobs and a better standard of living. Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA) is a model of rural development which envisages economic empowerment to a cluster of villages by strengthening their physical, electronic and knowledge connectivity. This will enable setting up local enterprises in rural areas, making use of untapped local resources. This case study highlights how the PURA framework could help setting of enterprises using untapped local resources in selected villages in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh. The existing local resources, key gaps in services are identified before making a roadmap for setting up enterprises in the region. Bahraich is one of most backward districts plagued by multiple problems, and can be considered as representative of the most diverse scenarios of Indian rural population. Bahraich can therefore be taken up for development of a real world model for realisation of PURA.
