Abstract

After having gained quite some experience in the field of job coaching for the young and unemployed, Sandra Schurmann decided to set up her own venture to address some of the problems in the German labour market she had identified over the years. She had noticed that most of the unemployed young people are not unwilling to work, but rather discouraged by their attempts to find work through governmental institutions and standard job trainings. Traditional job coaching approaches failed in transmitting crucial life skills like punctuality, reliability, teamwork, commitment and respect for others, which seem to be self-evident for most, but are hard to accomplish for the long-term unemployed. Recognizing this social problem Sandra founded Projektfabrik in 2005 with the mission of strengthening the unemployed youth's confidence through self-discovery, skills training and job coaching. To fulfill this mission, she developed a ten-month program including theatre and artistic pedagogy combined with careful mentoring and job coaching. The team of Projektfabrik uses theatre pedagogy as their tool to empower young people, most of them having given up hope on a proper job, and to help them along their first steps towards developing a life perspective. This case was designed for classes in social entrepreneurship. It can be used in undergraduate, Master, MBA or executive education courses that highlight challenges in social entrepreneurship such as definitional issues, funding social ventures and scaling. The case itself highlights how Projektfabrik works and the issues they've had along the way.
